Part One of an occasional new series featuring songs with awesome titles. Yep, nothing more complicated than that.
For our first entrant, we go to the world of Country Music, where song titles are an absolute art form. As are songs about booze and bars. Thusly, we present to you: "I’m Gonna Hire A Wino to Decorate Our Home" by David Frizzell.
Frizzell is the younger brother of the late and legendary 50s Country superstar Lefty Frizzell, and some of you might remember his song "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma" which appeared in Any Which Way You Can alongside Clint Eastwood and Clyde.
Bizarrely, "I’m Gonna Hire A Wino" was a Number one single on the American Country Music charts, and nominated for Song of the Year in the 1982 Grammy Awards. Would love to have seen them read those nominations out!
All laughing aside, this is actually a clever song with great and poignant lyrics. With the kind of adult themes rarely heard in Rock or Pop, but grist for the mill in Country. Seriously. Give it a listen. And yep that’s Tammy Wynette doing the introductions...
