When we think of streaming charts, new music generally jumps to mind. But, with Spotify and Apple Music revealing their most streamed music of 2018 earlier this week, it’s clear that when it comes to the classics we still can’t get enough!

A-ha's infectious, “Take on Me” still reigns supreme, and for good reason. The Norwegian synth-pop masters have held our attention for over 3 decades while we try to decipher the linguistic limbo of ‘take me on/take on me’. It may make no sense, but the open invitation has proved itself to be just as irresistible now as it was back in 1985.

Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” was another top throwback track on the list. Of course, you can never beat moonwalking with the ‘King of Pop’, but could it be the undeniable elation of declaring ‘the kid is not my son!’ that makes this anthem sit a cut above the rest? Or, maybe it’s the hypnotizing bass line and sexy keyboard stabs that make you move on autopilot. Either way, this one's clearly a stayer

Completing the trifecta of Australia’s ‘throwback’ streaming fave’s was Toto’s “Africa”. Featuring alluring harmonies, staggered drum fill breaks and a flute solo begging for an interpretive dance competition - it’s pretty safe to bet this late-night-air-band-extravaganza track won’t be getting knocked off the list anytime soon.

It was a dizzying time that can't be beaten, but can be reimagined endlessly. 80s Symphonic is a stunning new release that takes “Take On Me” and many other 80s classics to new heights with the addition of a 50 piece orchestra. Get your copy here.

If these throwbacks down memory lane have made you hungry for an old-fashioned good time, then check out our Hits of the 80s Playlist for a weekend kick-starter!
