Thurston Moore's legacy is the mind-blowing number of styles and movements that he's been associated with over his career. Most notably with Sonic Youth, he has rejected the stereotype of grand rock and roll excess, instead pursuing 'alternative' and always remaining experimental. 

Known for his unconventional guitar tunings, feedback and breaking the norm with noise, he was drawn to British culture and the New York no wave scene citing Patti Smith performances, readings from William H Burrows and the free-form style of The Stooges as an early influence on his aesthetic.   

Sonic Youth are also credited as one of the biggest influences on Nirvana.
