In what is likely one of James Cordon’s most raucous instalments of ‘Carpool Karaoke’, he takes the boys from the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a drive around LA, singing some of their biggest hits while the boys point out some pivotal landmarks from their misspent youth.
With Anthony Kedis riding shotgun and Flea in the back, sandwiched between Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer, they start the start the ride with some classic married couple bickering before James hits the stereo and we’re treated to an all-in-sing-along to the Chilli’s, “Can’t Stop”.
It’s a somewhat revealing road trip that inspires some cute reminiscing between Anthony and Flea who went to school together, notably an impromptu rendition of “Heemi Lheemy”, the very first song they wrote on a camping trip when they were 15. Flea prefaces the story by saying they were smoking copious amounts of marijuana at the time, which makes a lot of sense because the song appears to be entirely in its own language.
James grills Anthony on what exactly it is that he’s got to put in ya during “Give It Away” now, but Anthony gives nothing away, offering only innocent euphemisms in reply, while Flea bounces along head-banging and air-bass’ing in the back seat like a hyperactive kid.
A conversation about schoolyard roughhousing prompts a real-life, road-side wrestling match between James and Anthony, and a little more feather fluffing between the fellows sees them riding shirtless in no time. They end the trip on a high note, busting out in a rambunctious version of “By The Way”, with enough chair dancing from all on board to flip James’ Range Rover.
Tracks sung on the road include, “Can’t Stop”, “Give It Away Now”,”Californication”, “Dark Necessities”, “Zephyr” and “By The Way”.
