What's Love Got To Do With It?

What's Love Got To Do With It?

The cultural, religious and commercial phenomenon that is Saint Valentines Day has descended upon us again.

If you're in love, elated and have spent weeks constructing the most romantic of all nights - we have a super playlist for you called Classic Love Songs, below.

However, because we know that not everything is rose-coloured, we've thrown in a couple of anti-love songs too, for balance. Here are a few classic heartbreakers...

Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is

The ultimate power ballad! Foreigner's biggest hit having charted at #1 all over the world including Australia in 1985. We can't think of a time when this song has not been on radio high rotation, and it's one of those ones you can't help but sing along to, LOUD, while you're driving. A classic!

Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It?

"Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken" - OUCH. The song that gave Tina Turner her first #1 single, taken from her 5th album Private Dancer which was released in 1984. The song won 3 Grammy Awards, an MTV Award for Best Video and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2012. An autobiographical film of the same name was released in 1993 and was about the abusive relationship between Tina and Ike Turner. Originally this song was offered to Cliff Richard and then Donna Summer - both who didn't end up recording it.

Prince - Nothing Compares 2 U

Prince wrote this song but it first received commercial success globally when Irish artist Sinead O'Connor release dit in 1990. It's a real gut-wrencher this one, told from the perspective of an abandoned lover longing for love to return.

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart

One of the few songs in which singer Ian Curtis played guitar (minimally) on live versions. His lyrics ostensibly reflect the problems in his marriage to Deborah Curtis, as well as his general frame of mind in the time leading up to his suicide in May 1980. The title is an ironic reference to "Love Will Keep Us Together". Following Curtis's suicide, Deborah had the phrase "Love Will Tear Us Apart" inscribed on Ian's memorial stone.
